Intel is introducing a new way to upscale games built with the Unreal Engine 4. The technology uses artificial intelligence and computer vision to enhance image quality while reducing system requirements in real-time, making it easier for developers to bring their visions into reality.
The “intel xess” is a technology that will allow developers to create higher quality image processing, and the first titles to use it are Death Stranding, Hitman 3, and more.

How much can PC gamers truly gain from another another upscaling solution, given how effective NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution are already? In a few months, we’ll likely get a better answer to that question, since The Verge has obtained marketing documents confirming Intel’s plans to ship XeSS this summer.
Intel’s XeSS (short for Xe Super Sampling) is a new upscaling technique that, like NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling, uses AI to increase speed while improving output resolution and maintaining visual integrity. It’s an open-source software that’s meant to run on a variety of platforms.
Intel’s XeSS is likely to appear in as many as fourteen games in early summer, as seen in the slide below. Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Hitman 3, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider are among them, with the latter being one of the first games to showcase NVIDIA’s early DLSS technology.

Intel’s XeSS AI upscaling won’t be ready until ‘early summer,’ according to the company. (On the Precipice)
XeSS is designed to compete with existing AI-based upscaling algorithms, such as Nvidia’s own Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), by offering higher framerates without sacrificing quality. (AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution aspires to achieve comparable results as Intel and Nvidia, but it doesn’t employ the same super sampling methodologies.)
The purpose of XeSS, like other upscaling solutions, is to provide gamers with 4K-quality images without having to cope with the significantly more demanding hardware and power needs of running real-time 4K gameplay (something that only the most powerful and pricey graphics cards like the RTX 3090 or the RX 6800 can really achieve right now).
Games must be explicitly designed to function with XeSS, much like Nvidia’s DLSS, with Intel promoting titles like Death Stranding: Directors Cut, Legend of the Tomb Raider, Ghostwire Tokyo, Chorus, Hitman 3, and more. Even if you buy an Arc-powered laptop today, you won’t gain Intel’s upscaling advantages on those games since XeSS won’t come until the summer.
