Will Smith has already played the role of an athlete in his previous movies, but in King Richard: An Unusual Sports Biopic with Will Smith, he takes on a different kind of character. This time around, the actor plays a sports agent who is trying to get his client into the NFL draft and out from under shady boss King Richard (played by star-on-the-rise Mahershala Ali). Here’s what you need to know about this movie.

“King Richard” is a sports biopic that stars Will Smith. The film was directed by Peter Berg and it’s based on the true story of King Richard III.

King Richard - An unusual sports biopic with Will Smith

MOVIE ANALYSIS– King Richard is a “clear-eyed homage” to the guy who paved the way for tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams. The film, which stars Will Smith, centers on the father at the center of the Venus and Serena Williams tennis dynasty’s narrative.

The narrative of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams’ origins is told by King Richard, although the focus is on their father, Richard, rather than their sisters. Will Smith plays him, and his performance is clearly up for an Oscar consideration, since the whole picture hinges on his success.

 King Richard 2

“Our king, our father, and our tennis coach”

King Richard, the protagonist of Reinaldo Marcus Green’s latest film, is an odd “marketer.” Will Smith’s character, Richard Williams, travels across Los Angeles in a dilapidated VW van, looking for a coach for his children, whom he hopes to transform into tennis prodigies. However, his “hiring” strategy is showing up on local coaches’ doorsteps, hounding them for attention, passing them handwritten fliers extolling his kids’ numbers, and recommending they instruct for free. Except that he already understands what he’s doing – as a “kind of visionary” – and why he’s doing it since his daughters’ names are Venus and Serena Williams.

This is where King Richard, a sports biopic about the father who helped begin the careers of two of history’s most renowned tennis players, finds its special tension. When the movie starts, he realizes how amazing his daughters are, but the viewer knows how great Venus and Serena are from the start.

At the start of King Richard, I was perplexed as to why a film about these two renowned female athletes was told from their father’s perspective. Richard Williams, a highly unconventional person, thought his daughters would be tennis stars when Venus was four years old. He plotted their careers in a 78-page manifesto and taught them on Compton’s municipal courts. His passion was unquestionably important, but it was their talent that carried them to the height of their sports careers. So what’s the big deal about the ‘King’?

 King Richard 3

“But Dad’s a crazy as well…”

Then, approximately 30 minutes into King Richard, Williams persuades Venus (Saniyya Sidney) to stand in front of Paul Cohen (Tony Goldwyn), a Los Angeles coach who has worked with legends like Pete Sampras and John McEnroe, and Venus, unexpectedly, stuns Cohen with her ability. As a result, the film is dubbed King Richard rather than, say, Queen Venus, since the girls’ skill, although amazing, lacks narrative suspense, but Williams’ eccentric take on life does. Green’s film, which was written by Zach Baylin and executive produced by the Williams sisters, is mostly a homage to their unusual childhood, honoring the father who put them on their road but still maintaining a healthy skepticism of his rather insane aim.

“Oscar-mode” Will Smith?

Will Smith has lately focused on returning to traditional action movie roles in films like Bad Boys for Life and Gemini Man. However, both of his Oscar nominations — for Ali and The Pursuit of Happiness – were for biopics. He changed his physical appearance while continuing to provide the same compelling performances that made him renowned. The reign of King Richard is a step in the right direction. As Williams’ hair greys, he walks with an uncomfortable shuffle and rants in violent monologues, often spiraling into a frenzied fury at the smallest wrong.

Despite his unpredictable nature, Smith ensures that Williams’ eyes have a particular gleam and a certain attractiveness that he had long before his daughters’ reputation brought money and prosperity to the whole family. The plot of King Richard depends on whether the film’s characters understand and accept his sincere commitment to his daughters’ guidance, as well as his eccentricities; later, as Venus and Serena gain more experience in the tennis world, Williams’ motivation for raising them shifts from protecting them from growing up too quickly to aggressively fighting attempts to put them on a fast track to the pros.
