Ubisoft believes that gamers don’t understand the value of non-fungible digital assets and will always gravitate towards consumable items. The company is taking a different approach with its upcoming games, however, to create more reasons for players to hold onto their in-game purchases.

Ubisoft’s “quartz” is an opportunity for players to make money, according to the company. Ubisoft says that gamers don’t get NFTs and that they are not interested in them.

When Ubisoft released the beta for Quartz, a new platform that allows users to explore the potentially profitable world of NFTs, it sparked a storm of criticism, yet all of the backlash and criticisms that the program has sparked so far have originated solely from ignorance.

That’s according to Nicolas Pouard, VP of Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovations Lab, who commented on the debate in an interview with price comparison site Finder.com this week, claiming that players “don’t grasp” NFTs.

According to Pouard, it’s just a matter of time until gamers get beyond the hype and understand that digital receipts open up a slew of new possibilities, such as allowing players to invest in limited-edition things and then auction them off for profit after they’ve had their fill of them.

When asked what players were lacking in their reaction to Digits, Ubisoft’s first NFTs in playable triple-A games, Pouard remarked, “I believe gamers don’t comprehend what a digital secondary market may offer to them.”

“For the time being, due of the existing position and setting of NFTs, gamers feel it is first and foremost a tool for speculating, and second, a means for destroying the world.” But the final game is what we [at Ubisoft] are seeing initially. The end game is about allowing players to resell their stuff after they’ve done using them or playing the game.”

“As a result, it’s truly for them.” It’s quite advantageous. But for the time being, they don’t comprehend it.”

Later in the conversation, Pouard defends Ubisoft against players who believe the company’s venture into NFTs is merely another money-making ploy. Again, the executive asserts that it is acting in the best interests of gamers.

“The play to earn approach is all about enabling users to generate money by giving value to the whole ecosystem,” Pouard said. “In fact, it’s not just about Ubisoft.”
