As the crew approached the field’s edge, Stoker had an epiphany. He motioned his crew to come to a stop and proceeded to survey his surroundings. There was a strange quiet about him that he hadn’t noticed before. There was no longer any fauna. There was no chirping or chittering coming from behind him in the woods. Even the grass looked to be frozen in place. The air was tense, like a bow stretched all the way to its breaking point. Stoker gave his squad another signal. Forward, although at a sluggish rate. They made a few steps forward before the air around them shattered and mayhem began. Around him, his squad started to crumble one by one. Tactical intelligence was continuously flooding into his helmet’s HUD, but whatever was out there was too quick for his recognition algorithms to keep up with. The shouts of his teammates echoed through his ears, frightening him to the bone. Stoker, a veteran of two wars, was no stranger to bloodshed. However, violence of this kind was unheard of. The noises of fighting faded away in a matter of seconds. Stoker was on his own. As if nothing had occurred, the diverse types of life resumed their normal noises. Stoker heard a low mechanical buzzing behind him. With his rifle pointing in the approximate direction of the sound, he whirled around. What he saw was nothing compared to what he’d seen previously. Sergeant Stoker had never seen anything like that before. His HUD was illuminated by a bright light, and his vision went dark. The 42nd Terran Task Force was not the first and most likely would not be the last to visit this planet.
