Review - OlliOlli World -

I wasn’t one of those individuals that played OlliOlli when it originally came out over eight years ago, but I ultimately gave it a go and loved it for the most part. I simply felt there was a bit of a lack of concentration in it. It tried to be a simpler version of skateboarding, but it included some confusing controls and an unpleasant requirement that you click a button to correctly place your skate on the ground after doing a trick. I didn’t understand the hoopla at the time, but I wanted to test OlliOlli World. It seemed like a fresh twist on the genre, one that would appeal to both veterans and beginners, dedicated players and casuals alike. And the developers did not disappoint.

OlliOlli World Tricks

Bye-bye, compulsory landing button. I’m not going to miss you.

Before we go into the gameplay, there’s one thing to say about OlliOlli World. Let’s start with the obvious and speak about how deliciously strange, surreal, and cute this game looks. The closest way I can explain it is as if Adventure Time was dumped into a vat of LSD and then tinkered with some more by someone who still can’t get over the 1990s. This is a game where everyone dresses up like an Adventure Time character, talks like a forty-year-old wanting to get in with “the youngsters” (“gnarly” and “tubular” are two of the most prevalent terms heard in this game), and wears psychedelic colored clothing. It’s completely insane. Adorable in every way.

Yes, it’s corny to the point of being aggravating at times, but there’s something about OlliOlli World’s sense of humor that has me hooked from the start. Maybe it’s the grumpy, borderline thirty-year-old in me who doesn’t see the purpose of NFTs, TikTok, or trap music, but this homey aesthetic appealed to me. Maybe it’s because of my penchant for psychedelic visuals and absurdity. Maybe it was simply the fact that OlliOlli World seemed like a playable cartoon at the end of the day, and a very good one at that.

OlliOlli World

I’m not scoffing at the sight of that massive melting popsicle on the boardwalk. Given how fast-paced this game is, I scarcely noticed it.

Aside from the graphic style (and all that came with it, such the ability to construct your own skater in great detail), the primary difference between OlliOlli World and its predecessors is its vastness. It’s a lot bigger game than the last one, with more focus on storyline, wider levels, and more interactive components like quarter pipes and rideable walls. It also features a greater number of goals in each level, making it more replayable. You’re encouraged to do so since the more tasks you achieve, the more customization choices for your character become available. It may seem basic in idea, yet it works marvels, particularly when compared to OlliOlli World’s predecessors.

While the control system remains mostly same, with one stick dedicated to flips and the other to grabs, the absence of the forced landing button push makes OlliOlli World much more approachable to newbies. You may play the game as a hardcore completionist, searching for all hidden routes and sidequests to finish. You may also simply walk around each level at your leisure, executing stunts as you go, which will earn you enough goal completions to unlock another track. It’s the best of both worlds: approachable and hardcore at the same time, with no attempt to compromise either playstyle.

Graphics

It’s the same as Adventure Time, just 70 percent tubular.

I wanted to play OlliOlli World because I thought it would be a fun and tough arcade game. Sure, it may be that if you want it to be, but what I enjoyed most about it was its welcoming environment, which made me want to approach it as a peaceful, “feel good” experience on the borderline. Granted, I believe its bite-sized levels and general structure are more suited for a portable, such as the Nintendo Switch or the impending Steam Deck, but I had a great time playing it on an Xbox. Whatever way you choose to play it, OlliOlli World is just too cute and cuddly to pass up.

OlliOlli World’s major appeal is undoubtedly the surreal aesthetics, which combine psychedelia with cartoons like Adventure Time.

It’s a little complicated at first, but after you get accustomed to the control system, it’s a fun. It’s also a lot more intuitive than any other OlliOlli game, not to mention less harsh, since there’s no need to push a button before landing.

It’s silly and laid-back, with a lot of strange audio clips utilized for “voice acting.” It’s amusing, but it takes some getting used to.

Because of its fast-paced, bite-sized levels, OlliOlli World’s gameplay is ideally suited for a portable device, but it will be a pleasure to play no matter where you choose to play it. I really liked how it combined basic arcade controls with one of the cutest cartoon visual styles I’ve seen in a while. Playing it was also very soothing.

Final Score: 9.0
