Although Max is an exclusive HBO production, J.K. Rowling was not invited to attend Harry Potter’s big reunion because she has no relationship with the company but she attended a different event that day in London.

J.K. Rowling is an author who has written a series of books about the life of Harry Potter, which have been turned into movies for many years now. She was recently asked by HBO Max to attend their big Harry Potter reunion and she declined. The reason given was that she had already attended one in 2007 with her then-fiancé Neil Murray and didn’t want to go through it again.

Why Didn't J.K. Rowling Attend HBO Max's Big Harry Potter Reunion?

HBO NEWS IN THE FILM INDUSTRY Despite the fact that Max’s Harry Potter conference is the largest of its sort in years, the franchise’s creator did not attend. Why?

I don’t believe anybody needs to be introduced to Harry Potter’s wizarding world. J.K. Rowling’s excellent series of books has amassed a vast following of all ages since the first book was published in 1997. Furthermore, the first cinematic adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was released 20 years ago in December. (Or, as the film was titled, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.)

This magical story comprised eight Harry Potter films, with The Legendary Beasts prequel films following the original series’ conclusion in 2011. The actors who have brought Rowling’s legendary books to life on film have become the embodiment of their characters in Harry Potter: much of the previous ten years has been spent attempting to dispel this still-strongly-held image, with some success and some with less. The cast of HBO Max has gathered to reflect on their time in the wizarding realm, reminisce, and update the globe on their current whereabouts. J.K. Rowling herself is glaringly missing from Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. Here’s all we know about why right now.

What has been declared official?

Rowling’s absence has sparked a slew of rumors. Rowling and her team declined the invitation sent to them by Warner Bros., Entertainment Weekly reported, putting an end to speculation as to why the author chose to put her persona on the back burner for the convention she was so instrumental in bringing to life. Rowling’s excusal from attending had nothing to do with her previous transphobic comments. Rowling will appear in archive video shot in 2019 that has been considered “sufficient for a special,” according to the production team.

What they are debating

Despite Rowling’s team’s assurance that the author’s rejection is unconnected to her strong transphobic sentiments and the ensuing controversy, the team’s press release falls short of assuaging people who have observed Rowling’s continued hate speech.

Rowling made obscene statements about sexual assault on gender identity in her most recent speech, comparing the newly implemented gender recognition legislation in the courts to George Orwell’s 1984. Rowling’s hostility for transgender persons has been well-documented since she tweeted on June 6, 2020, “‘those who menstruate.’” I’m sure there was a term for them back in the day. Someone, please assist me. Wumben? In response to a gender-neutral piece, I asked, “Wimpund? Woomud?” Rowling wrote the book Troubled Blood, which has been accused of having transphobic material. Its protagonist is a cisgender guy who disguises himself as a woman and stalks and murders his victims.

Rowling’s ostensibly unpleasant and continuous story has caused many people to avoid dealing with her as a person. Warner Bros. said in 2020 that it was retaliating for the never-ending barrage of anti-trans comments, however the Legendary Beasts series would continue to be supported under a five-film deal. While Rowling’s staff vehemently claims that her transphobic behavior had a role in her unwillingness to return to Hogwarts, it’s impossible to fathom any other explanation for her absence than this dispute.

The Harry Potter cast’s thoughts

Members of the Harry Potter cast have demonstrated little tolerance for J.K. Rowling and have avoided any affiliation with her as much as possible. Daniel Radcliffe, the actor who plays Harry Potter, talked to The Trevor Project about the controversy:

“I understand that certain media sources will try to portray this as a feud between J.K. Rowling and me, but that isn’t what this is about, and it isn’t what’s relevant right now.” While Jo is undoubtedly to blame for the direction my life has gone, as someone who has had the distinction of working with and continuing to contribute to The Trevor Project for the last decade, and simply as a human being, I feel forced to say something now. Women, transgender or not, are women. Any remark to the contrary obliterates transgender people’s identity and dignity, and goes against all professional health care organizations’ opinion, which is considerably more knowledgeable on the topic than either Jo or I.”

In a series of tweets, Emma Watson, who portrayed Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, voiced her support for the transgender community.

“Trans individuals are who they say they are, and they deserve to live their lives without being continuously interrogated or told they aren’t.” I want my trans supporters to know that I, like so many others throughout the globe, see, appreciate, and love them for who they are.”

Ron Weasley and Ginny Weasley, played by Rupert Grint and Bonnie Wright, respectively, came out against J.K. Rowling’s essay on gender. “I strongly support the trans community and share the feelings of many of my classmates. Women, trans or not, are women. According to the Sunday Times, Grint said, “Trans guys are men.” “We should all have the right to live in a loving and judgment-free environment.” “If Harry Potter was a source of love and belonging for you, that love is boundless and available to accept without judgment or inquiry,” Wright said in response to her own tweet. Women are transwomen. Bonnie, I see and adore you.”

Following Rowling’s refusal to cease publishing her unfavorable attitude on transgender identities, the company behind it all, Warner Bros., joined the chorus and came out against her anti-trans language. According to Variety, the studio has published a statement in support of people who have been attacked by Rowling’s words.

“Warner Bros.’ commitment to diversity and inclusion is widely known, and building a diverse and inclusive culture has never been more vital to our organization and our global viewers.” We place a high importance on the work of our storytellers, who dedicate so much of themselves to share their works with the rest of us. We acknowledge our obligation to promote empathy and understanding of all groups and individuals, especially those with whom we work and those who are reached via our material.”

Rowling’s decision to stay absent from the occasion will probably never be revealed in full. However, it’s not unreasonable to believe that, in order to prevent further escalation of the disagreement and embarrassing moments, the performers decided that Warner would extend an invitation, which the author would politely refuse, and that everyone would be better off…
