Dark Souls 2’s battle system, lore and world are universally celebrated. However, the game itself is not quite as well received for its clunky controls that limit player movement and make combat a chore.

The “dark souls 2 is unfair” is a popular opinion, but there are many reasons why this game has been disliked. One of the most important ones is that it had a lot of great ideas, but they were poorly executed.

Every Souls enthusiast appears to enjoy taking a big ol’ stinking poo on Dark Souls 2. Something that I simply can’t seem to grasp. Dark Souls 2 is one of my favorite Souls games, although I’m not sure whether I’m in the minority.

While the same community conveniently forgets that Dark Souls 2 doesn’t have nearly as much jank as Dark Souls 1. Alternatively, the “remaster” (no fromsoft, doubling the framerate for a decade-old game does not a remaster make). Because of what, exactly? Are there “too many” bosses?

But let’s start with the positives:

  • Powerstancing. You gain a unique moveset when you use two weapons of the same kind. Even though there was an odd stat requirement, it was a completely new mechanism for the Souls series.

  • Herbs that renew spell charges (which was more of a “Demon’s Souls” feature) and a total revamp of the magic system.

  • The level design is really very good. Iron Keep recently shown how many players are unaware of the tried-and-true ‘bottleneck and Blitzkrieg’ strategy that has been in gaming since Wolfenstein 3D. Those same players also lacked situational awareness.

  • Lucatiel.

  • Ascetics of the Bonfire That meant you could gain NG+ things and opponents, as well as farm bosses, with enough farming.

  • Rolling in all directions. In general, player mobility in Dark Souls 2 seemed superior.

Now for the “drawbacks”:

  • Memory of the Soul. This is known as the “Git Gud” metric. It aggressively pushes the gamer to improve their gaming skills. Yes, it’s a little brusque. Isn’t that, after all, the objective of Souls games? The training wheels have been removed, and you’ve been thrown into the deep end.

  • There are too many bosses. When most bosses are optional, I don’t see why that’s an issue. If I’m trapped in the “progression” bosses, I’ve always seen it as a wonderful method to level up.

  • Level design that is “nonsensical.” Despite the fact that there is bonfire warping straight away, there are lots of shortcuts and secret pathways that make sense given the layout of each location. That “grief” arises from the way you go from Earthern Peak to Iron Keep, which has no bearing on how Earthern Peak or Iron Keep play, but I digress. You can also return to Majulla from the Iron Keep; it’s only that you can’t get from, example, the Bastille to the Iron Keep, which seems to be a problem?

  • While hollowing, the maximum HP was reduced. Like irritates me since it looks that everyone forgot about Demon’s Souls’ “Soul” form, which was FAR more violent in Demon’s Souls. There was no step-by-step decline. Soul form gave you 50% of your mas HP, and if you possessed Black World Tendency, it was considerably lower, at about 25%. No, the “muh new players” argument doesn’t hold up here, since a new player in Demon’s Souls with Black World Tendency was in a much worse situation.

  • There are no i-frames while using levers or traversing boss fogs. I’m conflicted between putting this in the genuine negatives and putting it here since it affects speedrunners.

Now for the drawbacks… Negatives that are genuinely negative:

  • Adaptability. I agree that linking a statistic to i-frames is just nonsense. That is something I just cannot disagree with.

  • Enemy respawns are limited. That is, until you uncover the Company of Champions in Majulla, which allows for limitless opponent respawns.

So, could someone kindly explain why Dark Souls 2 seems to be the odd man out? Dark Souls 2 dared to deviate from the formula, and as a result, the whole community (or at least a significant portion of it) dislikes it… Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring, on the other hand, are praised by the same community for turning the Souls formula on its head. It appears to me that it gets trash since Dark Souls Prepare to Die: 2 wasn’t included.
