The PlayStation 5 is coming soon and the company has revealed a new Ratchet & Clank game for it, slated to release in 2020. The series’ newest installment looks set to raise the bar for what games are capable of on consoles, but there’s one problem: be prepared to say goodbye to PSVR! Even though that may seem like a major blow for fans of virtual reality – which Sony once championed with their headset offerings – this VR-free version does have some advantages.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a game that would make Pixar go pale. It’s a PS5 video game that would be the best thing to happen to PlayStation since the PS4 was released.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - The PS5 Video Game That Would Make Pixar Go Pale

REVIEW – Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of the few action games that allows you to rediscover the joy of getting out of bed on a Sunday morning and watching your favorite cartoons on Cartoon Network while chewing on some candy.

As you race down the rails at breakneck speeds, take on massive armies of nasty alien monsters with even more absurd weaponry, and soar through dimensional rifts in the Rift Tether, it’s one thrill ride after another of spectacular adrenaline-pumping action. You may take a time to marvel at how very gorgeous this game is when you take a break to purchase a new rifle or hunt down a collectible. Ratchet the “lombax” has never been so startlingly realistically hairy, while Clank the robot has never been so… robotically gleaming that even C3PO would blush.

This time, the dynamic combo faced a major issue. The world as they know it is on the verge of a dimensional disaster thanks to a gadget called the Dimensionator and the participation of Dr Nefarious. Rifts into various realities have opened, the heroic couple has been torn apart, and the Dimensionator has been destroyed. It’s the ideal setup for some interdimensional mayhem, as well as a creative way to introduce Rivet, Ratchet’s counterpart, in a version of their planet ruled by a significantly more powerful Nefarious. And, yeah, there will be large guns who do strange things in this one.

Two lombaxes are much better than one!

The plot follows Ratchet and Rivet as they journey between numerous worlds in search of a means to create a new Dimensionator and save the whole world from crumbling. There are main missions to complete, optional side missions to complete (which you will because Insomniac Games has managed to make them all a bloody gaming experience), and the usual collection of rare items and ingredients to upgrade weapons, as well as gold bolts to unlock extras like visual filters to brighten up the scenery. This time, there are also pocket dimensions, which are little puzzle boxes with platforming that reward you with a new armour piece for Ratchet or Rivet if you complete them.

You’re transported to a little universe where you can blow up viruses and tear down firewalls with the help of a little robot pal named Glitch. Clank is also often confronted with logic difficulties akin to the Lemmings, in which he must direct miniature replicas of himself through a succession of mindless obstacle courses. You’ll be left scratching your head since there’s so much crammed into this game.

On new planets, the planet lombax

The primary game has a lot of diversity as well. Every planet has its own own atmosphere and ecology, and the game constantly surprises you with new things to discover. You may be riding a dinosaur-like horse or speeding across old mountain paths with your rope and rocket boots before they collapse. My own favorite experience was crawling through a dark space station while being pursued by something furious and terrible, but because to dimension-hopping, I was able to escape safely.

The game’s sole flaw is that hostile creatures sometimes get caught in landmarks or doors. In one side objective, several adversaries who were to be removed got trapped on the edge of a lava pool. In another, a terrifying beast that needed to be discovered and slain became trapped, and in still another, an opponent. I could hear them, but I couldn’t get to them quickly enough to dismiss them and carry on with the tale. I’d curse aloud (much to my girlfriend’s amusement…), then reset our checkpoints, by which time I’d managed to shoot the stupid opponent before the door shut.

“Guns, guns, guns!” (Matrix)

The franchise has always been known for its weaponry, of course. While the Groovitron disco pistol from Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction will always be a favorite of mine, the new Topiary Sprinkler glove is a close second. Until you strike them with your wrench, this odd weapon blasts a shower that turns every adversary into a lovely garden hedge, replete with flowers and falling leaves. Turning a gigantic, wicked spacecraft into garden ornaments that would look fantastic on Grandma’s yard is particularly twisted and fulfilling.

The more you play, though, the more you realize a plan for properly upgrading and replacing weaponry. After all, it makes no difference whatever murdering instrument you choose to dispatch an evil alien. We’re not talking about Counter-Strike-level tactical awareness here, but it doesn’t hurt to have good tactical sense when it comes to switching weapons since blasting and blasting isn’t enough. You must have firsthand familiarity with the weaponry. If you don’t, you’ll be bitten by the dust very fast. On the battlefield, the ability to employ dimensional rifts and dimensional ropes provides a little something more, allowing you to rapidly slip behind foes, evade mega-attacks, and reach platforms with the speed of a button push.

As if it were a Pixar movie

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart continues the series’ heritage of setting the bar for what PlayStation exclusives can do with the capabilities of a new platform. Even at a quick speed, the game never ceases to impress. Whether it’s cliched or not – it’s “like a Pixar movie” – it’s visually gorgeous. The characters are vibrant and expressive, the globe develops in breathtaking detail no matter which planet you visit, and I often came upon a collectible just by roaming about to take in as much of the scenery as possible.

The game, on the other hand, is an excellent tech demo for DualSense’s adaptive triggers, which provide more realistic feedback on weapons and actions by delivering impulses to your brain that you aren’t even aware of. You fire a shot, feel resistance beneath your trigger finger, and know that if you keep pressing, you’ll receive a larger shot if you keep squeezing. I’m still a big believer in the PS5’s haptic feedback potential, and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is a fantastic example of what a tremendously immersive experience it can be when a game really supports DualSense capabilities, and how much more immersed you can feel in the action and adventure.

Aside from the visuals and advanced technology, I believe Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has significantly enhanced the series’ plot. Don’t get me wrong: I’ve always like Lomax and his robotic buddy, but this was never a series in which I felt emotionally committed beyond the need to find the next unlocking weapon. This time, though, I was completely absorbed, particularly when it came to the narrative of Kit, the unhappy robot sidekick. He is an emblem of our times, with his sun-kissed yellow physique and gloomy demeanor, and I was hoping for a joyful finish to his narrative.

Because the fast-paced action and superb plot go hand-in-hand in this game, I believe Insomniac’s authors were influenced by the newest Marvel movies. I, who is not a huge fan of the series, am more enthralled than ever, and I’m looking forward to seeing a lot more of the next installment.
