The Call of Duty: Vanguard beta is already a vast improvement from last year. Hands-on impressions show that the game has improved in every area, with more maps and modes, better performance, and new content to explore.

The open beta for Call of Duty: Vanguard, which was released exclusively on the PS5 last weekend, recreated World War II combat, and it has been a tour de force of FPS game design so far. The new Patrol mode offers a thrilling new way to play the tried-and-true Call of Duty formula, and the inclusion of destructible environments to that on-the-ground action is a great addition. There are a few niggles here and there, but generally, this is the entry that will entice lapsed Call of Duty fans to return to the franchise they know and love.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is unquestionably superior than the previous installment, Black Ops: Cold War. Vanguard’s targeting and shooting are considerably tighter thanks to the reintroduction of the Modern Warfare engine, as opposed to the previous title’s looser feel. You can simply snap to mount onto surfaces and open doors again. I particularly like the new blindfire feature, which allows you to shoot with less eyesight while yet providing greater cover. It seems organic, as if it’s been there for a long time.

You can feel the weight of each weapon thanks to the superb sound design, well-designed graphic animations, and realistic controller sensations. Snipers and LMGs are cumbersome to use, while the submachine gun is light and fast. Each weapon has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. For example, the MG42 is poor at long-range shots, but it has a large clip of ammunition that you may use in smaller-scale scenarios. In this game, you’ll be able to select a loadout that fits you, and the weapons themselves don’t seem as restricted as older, less-developed weaponry from WWII.

The beta maps (Hotel Royal, Red Star, and Gavutu) each provide distinct combat situations that are both welcome and a decent indication of what to expect when the game is released in November. Two windows on either side of the Hotel Royal may be smashed to expose cover against those in the bar area, demonstrating the power of destructible surroundings. A rooftop section demonstrates the game’s verticality by providing a new path across the map as well as a means to drop down on unsuspecting opponents by shattering glass. This fascinating terrain, which looks out over a war-torn Paris, is one I want to play many times.

In a harsh Russian war-torn area, the Red Star is a wintry icon. This was mostly shown to show off the tactical options available, such as Domination and Patrol. It’s a fantastic level that, like Hotel Royal, offers a variety of gaming options for every Call of Duty gamer. As you take the B location, you’ll have short-range, dramatic gunfights inside, while A is an outside hotspot where snipers and long-range players may flourish. There are surprising forms of cover for you to utilize thanks to the sprinkling of vehicles spruced throughout. Even the indoor campers will be pleased to find some interesting places to set up camp.

The patrol mode, on the other hand, does an excellent job at keeping the action interesting and forcing campers to think on their feet rather than remain in one place. Like Hardpoint and Overwatch’s Payload, the goal of the game is to remain in a confined circle for extended periods of time. The white circle on the map moves around a lot in this mode, allowing for a more dynamic gaming experience as the ground you’re battling on changes all the time. This is now my favorite game mode in Call of Duty: Vanguard since it challenges you to make quick decisions while still being strategic. It’s a thrilling experience.

Finally, Gavutu is a noteworthy map since it has three totally distinct paths, making it a fun place to explore. A torn-apart battleship can be found on the left, a runway in the center where snipers will thrive, and a beach setting with tanks stuck on the sand on the right. Each one has a unique gameplay feature that will appeal to all Call of Duty fans. Go to the ship if you like close-quarters combat. Go to the beach if you like mid- to long-range fighting. The boat also has an unique function that allows you to raise and lower a platform, dramatically altering the protection of the B point with the press of a button.

Sledgehammer Games has demonstrated a commitment to great first-person shooter level design in what I’ve played thus far. The art design, particularly with Hotel Royal, is really amazing. These maps are very eye-catching. We’re on to a winner if the other 17 maps in the game are as excellent as these three.

I have a few small issues with Call of Duty: Vanguard, unfortunately. The first step is to reintroduce the dogs. Since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, kill streaks have been a staple of the franchise. The dogs are an exception to the rule that certain killstreaks are fair given the amount of work and skill required to get them. They’re much too strong and will totally disrupt the contest. You can call a pack of hounds with only 10 kills to take down everyone they see in one bite. It’s aggravating since they’re typically out of your line of sight and may interfere with your strategic play. There have been matches when several dog pack killstreaks have been used throughout my experience with the Call of Duty: Vanguard beta. That seems excessive, given how disruptive those packets are.

Furthermore, spawning problems were seen in this beta during patrol mode matches. Instead of spawning in opposing parts of the map, players were spawning in the same locations. This will be addressed, according to Sledgehammer Games, but it’s something to keep in mind when the complete game is released. I’ll give it a pass since it’s a beta, but I should note that the game lost frames several times due to packet loss and slowness. I can’t forget about the supposed behind-the-scenes allegations of Activision workers being harassed at work, which will be on my mind the whole time I’m playing the game.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is off to a good start, with each of the three levels presenting entertaining gameplay situations and the weaponry feeling fantastic to handle. After the underwhelming Black Ops: Cold War, the series seems to be back on track with this World War 2 installment.
